The intermediaries are Thisavrou's method of conflict resolution, one they view as far superior to the "justice" systems found in most universes. Instead of imposing unilateral punishment, they speak to the harmed and the accusers to tailor a specific response to crimes committed. They can also be called in to negotiate situations or provide help to individuals (anything from serious legal disputes to grief counseling).

Even in casual conversation, it's obvious the Savrii place an extreme amount of trust in their judgement. People might disagree with individual decisions, but they trust that the intermediaries have their best interests in mind-- and even then, the dissenters are typically the ones who haven't spoken to the intermediaries personally on the topic. Criminal accounts vary a little more, but in general, the redeemed speak soberly of how the intermediaries showed them the truth of their actions-- and no one who has spoken to them seems to have persisted in their crimes. This applies to violent criminals as well as petty ones, though more severe cases will occasionally be sent for mandatory therapy at one of the more remote mediation centers.

A PC wouldn't be allowed to take on the position casually-- the intermediaries have devoted their entire lives to carrying out the role. However, if they showed interest in becoming one, they might be accepted for training. In practice, this would consist of shadowing experienced intermediaries and assisting as requested.
